Once hunted near extinction, Bison have stampeded back into the limelight thanks to a bid to become our national animal. 

“It’s about recognizing the role the species has played, and celebrating this American icon,” said John Calvelli, a spokesman for the Wildlife Conservation Society, based in New York City. “It’s one of those things that could bring people in this country together.”

The National Bison Legacy Act, introduced in May by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wy.) and Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) would name the North American bison as our national mammal. Though the designation would confer no specific protections, it would elevate bison to a lofty perch alongside the bald eagle, which was adopted as America’s national bird in 1782.
